Seven-year-old Diana is leading a double life. On the surface she’s a happy, confident, secure child. Sadly, her hidden life filled with abuse leads her to believe she’s a bad, weak, mortal sinner. Her childhood becomes a trauma story steeped in silence and secrets. Whenever she reveals secrets, horrible things happen. At the age of 13, she tells a secret which culminates in a horrific family tragedy. She believes she’s the cause.

As a teenager, she unsuccessfully tries to escape her past by changing her name to Diann and gets caught in a stormy adolescence. She arrives at adulthood clouded with self-doubt. Her self-esteem is battered and bruised with one exception. She knows she’s a good mom. When flashbacks and nightmares threaten her mother role, she chooses to get help. She bursts through the wall of silence surrounding her and starts talking — first, to a therapist, then to her family. Finding her voice is her first big step on the path to breaking a legacy of secrecy and shame; and the beginning of her healing.

Buoyed by her love for her children, she embarks on a curative journey encompassing therapy, redefinition of her spiritual beliefs, self-help books, and workshops on anger and forgivenesss.

After being a featured guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show (Septembr 2, 1987), Diann realizes talking about abuse can help her as well as other victims. Speaking out validates her life.

Immediately after the show, Oprah calls and offers to buy Diann’s story. Diann declines the generous offer, knowing she’s still healing from the far-reaching effects of her past trauma. She has more work to do before her story is complete. Six months after her Oprah appearance she chooses to leave her abusive marriage as well as her victim role. In the process of divorcing herself from her husband and childhood abuse, she discovers she no longer leads a double life.

She is now healthy enough to attact a relationship she deserves. She finds and marries Fred, her prince charming.

Diann’s memoir is a testament to the resiliency of the human spirit. By telling this color rich story – she honors her healing. Today Diann Christine M. Kissell symbolizes her color of well-being by living a turquoise life. She has come full circle and is telling her story to the world.
